Our Approach

Quality Shed Building from Stockman Sheds Toowoomba.

Stockman is a bespoke shed builder based in Highfields, on the Darling Downs. We design and construct high-spec sheds for residential, rural and commercial clients across South East Queensland — and ship DIY kits state-wide.

Our sheds are made in Australia using 100% Australian BlueScope Steel and COLORBOND® cladding. None of this namby-pamby imported stuff that fades in our summer sun. Ryan, David and our in-house crew take every build from first conversation through to handover.

Stockman Sheds is a QBCC licensed builder (#15408423) delivering over 250 sheds a year across Toowoomba and the Darling Downs, Ipswich, the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. We use 15–20% more steel than the industry standard and carry a 4.9-star Google rating from 80 verified reviews.

They literally did everything and the whole time had fantastic communication — even sending updated 3D versions when I made changes.

A few things needed discussion along the way, but what impressed me was how they handled everything — openly, calmly and professionally.

Common Questions

Got Shed Questions?

How much does a custom shed cost?
Every Stockman shed is fully custom designed, so there’s no fixed price list. Your final cost depends on the size and height of the shed, your site and soil type, and extras like doors, windows, insulation and mezzanines.

As a rough budgeting guide for a full build (shed, slab and install on a standard, level site), most customers end up somewhere around $500 to $800 per square metre.

For example, a 9×9m shed (81m²) typically falls between $40,500 and $64,800 depending on features.

These are ballpark figures only — final pricing always comes back to your specific site and design. Want real numbers for your project? Request a free quote.
What’s included in a Stockman shed quote?
Our standard full-build quote covers a complete shed package, not just a kit. It typically includes:
  • Custom shed design and engineering
  • Shed kit using quality Australian steel
  • Concrete slab for standard A/S/M soil on a level, accessible site
  • Installation by our build team
  • Council approvals and certification
We also offer kit-only quotes if you’re outside our build area or using your own builder — that includes the full shed kit with all components and fixings, plus engineering and instructions.

Extras like insulation, roller door motors, personal access doors, windows, glass panels, gutter guard, mezzanines and reactive soil footings are quoted separately based on your needs.
Do I need council approval to build a shed in Queensland?
In most cases, yes. Across SEQ, you generally need building approval if your shed is:
  • Larger than 10m²
  • Higher than about 2.4m
  • Longer than 5m on any side
  • Attached to another building
  • Close to services like sewers or stormwater
Each council has its own rules, but anything bigger than a tiny garden shed will usually need approval. We handle the certifier and council approvals for you as part of every Stockman build — across Brisbane, Ipswich, Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay, Logan, Toowoomba and Gold Coast councils.
How close can I build a shed to my fence or boundary?
In Queensland, setback rules depend on your council, your shed’s size, and its height:
  • Road boundary: minimum 6 metres from the front fence line
  • Side and rear boundaries: generally 1.5 metres, but you can build closer if the shed is under 4.5m at the eave and meets fire separation requirements
  • Within 1.5m of a boundary: no part of the shed can be higher than 3.5m
If you need to go closer than the standard setbacks, you can apply for a boundary relaxation through your council — though approval isn’t guaranteed and is at the council’s discretion.

Rules vary between councils, so we always check setback requirements for your specific block as part of our design and approval process. Read our shed planning guide for more detail.
What size shed do I need?
It depends on what you’re storing, how you’ll use the space, and how much room your block allows. Here are some common starting points:
  • Double garage: 6m × 6m (36m²)
  • Triple-bay garage: 6m × 9m (54m²)
  • Workshop or hobby shed: 9m × 9m (81m²)
  • Large machinery or farm shed: 10m × 20m (200m²) and up
  • Caravan or motorhome: minimum 3.5m wall height, usually 4m+ at the eave
We always recommend going slightly bigger than you think you need — nobody has ever said their shed was too big. Check out our shed sizes guide for more detail.
Should I get a DIY shed kit or a full build?
We offer both, so it comes down to your situation:

Full build is our most popular option. We manage everything — design, council, slab, kit manufacturing, delivery and installation. You get one point of contact and a finished shed handed over ready to use.

Kit only suits owner-builders or customers outside our SEQ build area. You get the full shed kit with all components, fixings, engineering and assembly instructions, ready for your own concreter and installer. We can manufacture and deliver a kit within about 6 weeks.

Not sure which is right for you? Get a quote for both options and compare.
What concrete slab do I need for a shed?
The industry standard for a basic shed slab is 100mm thick, 25 MPa concrete with SL72 mesh. Stockman goes higher as standard:
  • Sheds under 100m²: 100mm thick, 32 MPa concrete with SL72 mesh
  • Sheds over 100m²: 125mm thick, 32 MPa concrete with SL82 mesh
  • Heavy vehicles: 32 MPa with SL92 mesh
  • Reactive soil (E class): 300×300mm edge beam with trench mesh and thickening beams at 6m max centres
We use 32 MPa across the board because it’s stronger, more durable and better value long-term than the 25 MPa most competitors pour. The slab should outlast the shed above it. Read more in our concrete slab guide.
What are the most popular COLORBOND® shed colours?
The most popular COLORBOND® colours for sheds in South East Queensland are:
  • Monument™ — deep charcoal grey, modern and industrial
  • Woodland Grey™ — warm mid-grey, blends with rural and suburban settings
  • Surfmist™ — light and bright, popular for walls and trims
  • Night Sky® — near-black, sharp and contemporary
  • Dune® — warm neutral, suits coastal and country properties
COLORBOND® offers 21 colours in total, all designed and tested for Australian conditions. Browse our COLORBOND® colour inspiration page to see real sheds in every colour.
How long does it take to build a custom shed?
Our contracts allow up to 6 months from sign-off to handover for a full build. Here’s how that typically breaks down:
  • Council approval: roughly 6 weeks
  • Kit manufacturing: 4–6 weeks
  • Concrete slab: around the 4-month mark
  • Shed build: around the 5-month mark
  • Handover: within 6 months
For kit-only orders, we can manufacture and deliver within 6 weeks. Timelines can vary with weather, council and site conditions, but we manage every stage so you have one point of contact throughout.
