You’ve answered the call of the open road, tapped into the Australian dream and bought yourself a campervan! Well done, there will be some amazing adventures ahead. When you’re not out exploring our magnificent land, you’ll need a safe and secure spot to park your caravan in. It’s a significant investment that you want to keep in top notch condition so it treats you well for many years to come.
That’s why the right recreation storage solution is crucial. You want a shed that offers easy access and plenty of internal space to complement your outdoor lifestyle. Let’s take a look at a few things you should consider when planning and designing your caravan shed.
A Guide to Designing the Perfect Caravan Shed
Caravan Height
The height of your caravan shed is a super important consideration. You need to get it right the first time, because you can’t raise the roof once your shed is built. We recommend taking into account the height of your caravan, then adding an extra 20 or so inches (keep in mind your council height restrictions of course). It’s not going to cost you much more to have a higher roof, and it helps accommodate things like your motorhome aerial or the extra carrier racks you hadn’t accounted for.
Caravan Depth
There’s a couple of things to think about here. First, you want space to move around your caravan. This is critical for doing maintenance on it, and for ease of packing. It also gives you more space to store other things, or throwing up a few shelves. Secondly, don’t underestimate the length of your caravan. Remember there’s a drawbar in front that adds a couple of meters and needs to be accommodated!
The Caravan Shed Entry Door
Some caravan owners opt for an open bay shed, like a larger version of a carport. If you choose an enclosed caravan shed, you need to think hard about the entry door size and style. For a roller door, you need to have extra height above the door and below the roof to accommodate the roll. Definitely bring this up with your shed designer, because you don’t want the wrong size door delivered! Sliding doors are another option. Whatever you choose, ensure you have enough breathing space on either side of your caravan to make parking easier.
The Angle of The Driveway
The pitch of your caravan shed driveway is also going to impact the ease of parking. If the driveway is uphill or downhill to the shed door, you could run into issues with the height of your caravan. You don’t want it crashing into the top of the doorway. This is a problem that needs to be carefully considered in the early stages of your planning, particularly if your property is on uneven ground.
Reversing Space
We’ve all had a good laugh at our mates struggling to reverse park their boat trailer or caravan. Truth is, it can be stressful, and expensive, if you get it wrong! A tight squeeze can lead to damage to your shed, caravan or both. You want a shed design that allows for easy maneuverability in and out. I think you’ve picked up what we’re putting down by now - more space is better than less in your caravan shed design!
Extra Caravan Shed Features
A caravan shed from Stockman Sheds is fully customisable, so the size and shape is totally dependent on what you need and want. It also means you can include features to make it your own. The COLORBOND® materials we use also give you a wide range of sublime colour choices.
Thinking Ahead to Your Next Caravan
Are you at the start of your caravanning journey? If so, you might be wanting to upgrade your camper in a few years time. You won’t be able to increase the size of your shed though, so it's best you build your caravan shed with any future purchases in mind. A bigger shed will give you flexibility in your caravan choices in the future!

This is usually the first question people ask us in relation to their new shed. We build custom sheds here at Stockman, meaning we don’t have a standard range with standard prices.
