Why Buy a Skillion Roof Shed?
I want to touch on skillion roof sheds today. We get many requests about them and have built a fair few skillion sheds in the last couple of years. There are a bunch of reasons why there’s such a buzz around them, and why many Queensland shed owners are going down the skillion route. I want to go over those reasons, but first a quick definition so you know exactly what I’m talking about.
A skillion roof shed comes with a single, sloping roof surface. It slopes in one direction, so you’ll also often hear them referred to as ‘mono pitch’ sheds. The simplicity of the roof makes it very versatile - it can be easily added onto existing structures, or a ‘double skillion shed’ can be crafted that incorporates two single-pitch roofs.
The roof of a shed is actually super important when it comes to the functionality and look you’re after. So why is it that the skillion option ticks so many boxes for so many people? Here are a few reasons.
1. Excellent Drainage
The flat nature of the single, sloped surface gives a skillion roof superior drainage qualities. Waters run easily off the roof, so the risk of pooling and leaks is reduced right down. This makes them well-suited to Queensland, where our thunderstorm season brings heavy rains that need a tough shed to match.
The efficient drainage system helps protect the structural integrity of your shed, while also reducing maintenance time. Leaves and debris roll off the roof, and there’s no pooling of water to worry about.
2. Perfect for Solar Panel Installation
If you’re looking to build a shed with solid eco-credentials, a skillion is a good direction to go. The flat, slanted surface is just waiting for solar panels to be installed, and you can work with your builder to optimise the positioning for maximum sunlight reception. The panels can then be used to power your shed, plus other buildings on your property.
Hello, smaller carbon footprint.
3. Easy Rainwater Harvesting
While we’re on the topic of sustainability, it’s worth acknowledging how easy a skillion roof makes it to harvest rainwater. The single slope means water can easily be directed to a collection point like a rainwater tank. From here it can be used for gardening, cleaning or other non-potable uses. This is a real bonus if you’re in an area with water restrictions, or you’d simply like to reduce your reliance on council water and contribute to environmental sustainability.
4. Maximises Internal Space
Let's dive inside a skillion roof shed! The amount of internal space is incredible, enhanced by the higher ceiling on the one side of the shed. This space can be used for overhead storage, or housing larger equipment and tools. It gives an open and airy feel to the shed too, so it feels comfortable to be in.
5. Versatility
The high ceiling also means the internal space is very versatile. You can customise it with tall shelving, or even install a mezzanine level to increase your floor space.
The adaptability of the flat roof means it easily slots in with existing structures and can be adjusted to suit your shed vision, whether you’re building a workshop, skillion roof garage or industrial shed. It’ll suit a large range of environments, and this versatility has added to its popularity.
6. A Modern, Elegant Look
If you’re looking for a sleek aesthetic, you’ll love the minimalist feel and clean lines of a skillion roof. It complements a range of architectural styles, with simplicity giving it a sophisticated edge that appeals to a large cross-section of homeowners. The fact is, these sheds look as good as they perform. Whether in a backyard, a farm, acreage or commercial property, a skillion looks the goods.
7. Easy Skylight Installation
That flat roof makes for easy skylight installation in a shed. This improves natural lighting throughout the shed, and reduces the need to flick a switch during the day. It creates a bright and ambient vibe that is great for working.
At Stockman we often recommend going for custom glass panels on your roof, as these are more resistant to the hail storms the Queensland summer can bring.
